WA Division

Dear Members and Friends,

In closing the 2009 correspondence to members and friends, it is my pleasure to also announce our first Continuing Professional Development Session and Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 23rd of February (flyer). Yes this seems so far away right now, and yes there are so many other things to think about, but trust me the 23rd of February will be upon us in no time.

Nominations for positions on the Western Australian Division Committee have now closed. It is now possible to advise that voting will not be necessary as no position has been contested.

Some of us are in wind down mode; some are gearing up for a new start to 2010, with the new DEEWR contracts having been announced or new programs of work to prepare. We wish you all the very best in you planning and preparations and look forward to making contact with you.

May we, “the Committee” thank you for your support in 2009. We look forward to your continued support in 2010 and trust that you have a safe and happy Christmas with family and friends. May you welcome in the New Year in a safe and happy way. May prosperity be with you in every way for 2010 whether you are retaining your current position, entering new positions, taking leave, travelling etc. We look forward to your presence at our first Professional Development Session.

Wishing you a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year.

Janette Wells.
CDAA WA President

Career Capers - 23 February 2010

KEEPAD INTERACTIVE “Career QUIZ”

Technology to engage people with - special needs and all age groups
The CDAA WA Division has enlisted the support of modern technology (keepad) for a great way to start the 2010 year of professional development. Career Capers quiz will help you to develop/expand your knowledge of career information. Using “keepad” to record your answers will provide learning about career resources, about the new requirements for professional standards and how to can integrate these into your work in 2010 in a fun and interactive manner. Members will answer questions through a Response Card which provides opportunity for active participation and contribution whilst remain anonymous. Once you have used this technology you will think of many other situations where it could be used. We would love you to join us for a fun and entertaining start to the 2010 year.

CDAA 2010 National Conference

CDAA 2010 National ConferenceThe 19th annual conference for the Career Development Association of Australia focuses on how career practitioners could be making a difference to the world they live in as well as the world future generations will experience. Keynotes and guest speakers will provide insights into current career development theory and practices.

The theme 'greening career development' was chosen to illustrate that it is possible to promote sustainability, environmental consciousness and the triple bottom line both individually within your own practice and also in the scope of your work with clients.

  • Hear the amazing career story of Li Cunxin - Mao's Last Dancer in the context of career transition and transformation across cultures, into new fields and towards sustainable futures.
  • Be challenged by Dr. Norm Amundson as he talks on the foundations of green guidance and tools for implementing it in your practice.
  • Explore the 'Green New Deal' with Darren Bilsborough in his discussion on the creation of green jobs for our future economy.

PD Day - Tuesday 6 April 2010
Masterclass with Dr Norm Amundson

Metaphor Making: Your Career, Your Life, Your Way

In this class Dr. Amundson will explore how to effectively use metaphors in career guidance using principles and activities from his new book: Metaphor Making. The discussion will include the underlying theoretical foundations of this approach as well as some limitations. The intervention exercises will focus on 1. Client Initiated Metaphors - using drawings, extension and time-line; 2. Counsellor Responsive Metaphors - a form of active listening and offering encouragement and challenges; and 3. Counsellor Initiated Metaphoric Exercises - using perspectives of others, parallel imagery, physical representations, and group input. There also will be a discussion of how to use metaphors in supervision as part of a case conceptualization approach. Multiple career related metaphors will be introduced (40 metaphors) and an exercise for personal exploration using this spectrum of possibilities will be outlined.
