Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Jeff Fullelove and Diane McLaren for becoming a Professional member, Naomi Nobel and Teresa Zemek becoming Associate members, and Chris Froude for taking out a Student membership. | National Matters |
These are exciting times as we consolidate our name change from the Australian Association of Career Counselors to the Career Development Association of Australia (CDAA).
With mixed emotions, we have said goodbye to Sharon Starr (who has been our National Secretary for the past 14 years). We wish Sharon every success in her new career pathway - Landscape Designing. However, as one door closes, another door opens and with that I introduce Graham Pratt who takes on the new full-time National Executive Officer position. Graham joins CDAA at a very busy time being involved with the Tasmanian National Conference and the National Annual General Meeting which adopted a number of constitutional changes. His primary activities so far have involved the many facets of our name change and taking CDAA to new heights.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) in the last few years has been busy establishing Policy and Standards. They are currently busy preparing a strategic plan to ensure the CDAA positions itself for strategic professional leadership as a peak advisory body to Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA).
The NEC now comprises four key portfolios: Treasury, Communications, Membership and Continuing Professional Development. Each portfolio will have a liaison role with the corresponding WA Divisional representatives.
Conferences CDAA 2009 Annual Conference
The Melbourne conference link is now live from the front page of the CDAA website. Planning is progressing well and a Call for Papers will soon be advertised. You may have noticed on the news that the Tasmanian Minister for Education who spoke at our Hobart conference is now the Premier!

| Scholarships |
As part of the Australian Government’s Education Revolution, the Scholarships for a Competitive Future initiative will double from 44,000 to 88,000 by the year 2012. As part of this expansion, two new scholarship categories will be introduced in 2009:
- National Priority Scholarships for students enrolling in priority areas; and
- National Accommodation Scholarships for students relocating interstate to study specialist courses not available near their home.
The Government proposes that the new National Priority Scholarships be offered to students undertaking undergraduate studies in nursing, teaching, medicine, dentistry, allied health, science, engineering and mathematics.
The Government is keen to consult widely with stakeholders and interested parties about the new scholarships, including which disciplines should be covered under the National Priority Scholarships. To facilitate this, the Minister for Education, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, released a Discussion Paper on7 April 2008 for comment. Email Dr Caroline Perkins Branch Manager at scholarships@deewr.gov.au

'Your first job' is a set of learning modules about the labour market. It is a program for year 10, 11 and 12 students and for young people entering the workforce for the first time. This is a wonderful resource, providing abasic understanding of Australia’s industrial relations system and another tool for career practitioners to use.

| Special Thank You |
Thank you Austal Ships for your contribution to our National Conference held in Tasmania. For those of you who could not make the National Conference Austal Ships made a significant contribution as a Bronze Sponsor as well as to the gastronomic delights of stall holders and delegates by providing a café machine. The Lattés and Cappuccinos were professionally made which added to the atmosphere and delicious aromas. |

| Defence Force Recruitment |
On the 25th of June the Defence Force Recruitment will be presenting a Professional Development opportunity that will overview the processes and requirements for entry into their various programs and positions. Please contact me if you would like further information.
Thank you to every one who made this session a success. Thank you to our DFR Liaison Officer Mabel Laidlaw for her skills in organization this session. The participants were provided with the latest release of information from the DFR, handouts CD and much more. There was also a hands-on session, for participants to experience what it is like to be treated like a new recruit. (I wonder how many of the participants actually passed their test?) |
