VICTORIA DIVISION DECEMBER BULLETIN

Dear colleagues

This is just a very quick bulletin which echoes the words and sentiments expressed by Carole Brown in wishing you all well for the festive season.

And hasn’t it snuck up on us so quickly! Sadly this message is not adorned with too many festive graphics and colourful images as it needs to be sensitive to your IT security screening software although at times even the CDAA logo has a problem with my own system at work. However, in reflecting back over the year it is evident that we are also making strong progress in Victoria with a growing membership base and increasing interest in PD activity. The “setting up shop as a careers counsellor” PD session in November was a great success and the end of year function was also a very interesting night with two great guest speakers. Both events were attended by around 25 members.

The next event on the calendar will of course be the AGM with a date to be confirmed for late February. You will receive an invitation for this in January and also notice for members to consider nominating for the committee. At the AGM you will be provided with an outline of PD activity for the year with some very interesting activities are well into the planning stage. It will be an interesting year as we move full swing into recording CPD points and this will be the focus for a briefing session at the AGM.

It is an important part of this time of year to reflect on our achievements over the last 12 months as well as consider where or how we can improve on our professional and personal relationships. It is important to relax and enjoy company with family and friends as well as reflect on the spiritual nature of the Christmas season. This was brought home to me only last Friday when the management staff at VECCI staffed the Salvation Army bus at Federation Square to provide a BBQ for passers-by as a gold coin donation fundraiser. This annual event also serves the regular clients that use the salvos services. The contact with those who are on low incomes, live in hostel accommodation or have no-fixed address is a salutary reminder that at this time of year there are many who go without. There are many opportunities to assist through food or present drops at various retailers and I am sure that we all do something in whatever way we can to support those who are in need.

And this commentary is a segue onto something a little bit more personal for many of us. I was recently contacted by one of our new members this year, Poonam Dua. Many of you who assisted at the two Careers Expo’s this year would have met Poonam where she was of great assistance to clients with an overseas background. Poonam explained that her mother had a serious accident and she has had to go back home to provide care and support. Poonam has a little puppy a couple of months old and had to place it into a kennel but apparently the dog is not adjusting too well.

The request is a simple one to see if there may be a member who might be able to care for the dog for about 6 weeks or so until Poonam returns to Melbourne. If there is a member who can assist that would be greatly appreciated and Poonam will cover all costs for food etc. I have Poonam’s permission to provide her email address as contact for anyone able to assist. She can be contacted at: drpoonamdua@yahoo.com

As the year quickly draws to a close the Committee wish you all well and trust you all have a happy, safe and enjoyable festive season.

See you in 2010
