VICTORIA DIVISION BULLETIN: NOVEMBER 2009

Dear colleagues,

I trust that you are not suffering with “Bulletin burnout” with my last bulletin only last week quickly followed by the National e-bulletin this week as we now also quickly get over our losses on the Melbourne Cup and count down 7 weeks days to Christmas!

However there are two more events for you to attend including the end of year function in early December. This bulletin provides more detail and the registration link as well as other news items below.

SETTING UP SHOP AS A CAREER COUNSELLOR - 25 November 2009

The workshop will focus on the needs of career practitioners who have just set up shop as a career counsellor and will focus on how to make money from your service, getting clients, marketing, budgeting and other crucial issues such as maintaining a professional image.

Theme: Setting up shop as a career counsellor is the easy part. The hard part

  • Is making money from providing your services.
  • How do you get clients to use your service?
  • What is the most effective way to market what you do?
  • Can you do it on a shoestring budget yet project a professional image?
  • How do you manage your accounts?

If you're in a mess, chances are your service will also be in a mess. Do you need some pointers about how to keep records, produce compliant invoices and complete your annual taxation returns?

This session will also be useful for members who have been in business for a while and need to refresh their thinking in how their business model is operating. Well-known CDAA member Janice Simpson will deliver this session.

Janice has managed a career development business, Career Kaleidoscope, which she sold in 2007. She now maintains a micro career counselling business.

She has been a business development leader in Melbourne's West as well as a Business studies teacher at RMIT and Victoria University.

VICTORIAN CDAA END OF YEAR CELEBRATION: CAREER RETROSPECTIVE - Wednesday 2 December 2009

The theme for this end of year function is to provide members to a Career Retrospective of two guests who have both enjoyed very diverse career paths. The presentation will follow initial career choices made and then follow key influences or events that led to new decisions and directions.

The Association has been very fortunate to secure the well-known ABC presenter Dr Gael Jennings and also Squadron Leader Andrew State from DFR to be the key note guests at this year’s event. You will all be assured of a very interesting and enjoyable function that will include many lucky ticket prize draws.

The event will also celebrate the conclusion of the 2009 Mentor Program and also launch the program for new members interested in participating in 2010.

A brief overview of our two speakers:

Dr Gael Jennings is a strategic advisor to federal, state and local government, specialising in media, communications, education, health, medicine, science, engineering and maths, a broadcaster in current affairs, an executive in science and factual TV, and a media/ communications consultant, author and speaker. Gael has just recently taken up a new role as CEO of Great Connections and you will learn all about this on the night.

Squadron Leader Andy State entered the Royal Air Force in June 1989, graduating from Royal Air Force College Cranwell in November 1989. Following specialist Supply and Movements training, his first tour was at Royal Air Force Waddington developing deployment support for the new E3-D Sentry (AWACS) fleet. Since that time he has enjoyed postings to the UK, European, Kenya, and other African postings. He has also been posted in Washington and then transferred from the RAF to the RAAF in 2007, and then had a stint at DMO which was a precursor before becoming the Senior Military Recruiting Officer for Victoria in January 2008.

Please make sure you register early for this event, as numbers will fill quickly: PLEASE REGISTER BY MONDAY NOVEMBER 30TH TO ASSIST WITH CATERING

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SURVEY:

Please note that the current national bulletin requests members to participate in a PD survey. This is being done at national level rather than at divisional level so it would be appreciated if Victorian members could complete the survey. The Victorian Committee will then consider the survey data in developing the PD calendar for 2010. However, if members would also like to discuss any issues relating to PD then please contact me at any of the options listed below.

Help us to help you by providing feedback on your CPD needs in 2010 through our online survey here. Complete the survey before 18th November to go into our draw for a free registration to attend a Divisional PD event in 2010.

CAREER DEVLOPMENT ASSOCIATION MEMBER UPDATE:

The National Committee has just provided the latest figures for membership, which shows that the overall national membership is growing. And in Victoria the total membership has grown by 66 members so far this year. And of this there are now 33 student members with many thanks to Julie farthing doing some great work extolling the benefits of membership to students undertaking Careers Development courses.

MEMEBRSHIP OF VICTORIAN COMMITTEE:

The end of year function for 2009 is also significant as it means that the first event for 2010 will of course be the AGM and networking event in February. This will also provide all members with the opportunity to consider whether they would like to contribute to the division by nominating for a position on the committee or perhaps volunteer to co-ordinate a PD activity, or an event such as a Careers Expo.

What I can say is that for the last 2 years a small group of volunteers has been the committee and I would like to thank: Christine Holland, Meredith Shears, Kaye Nolan Jahna Pulford and Pam MacDonald with Arthur Doddrell managing the Mentor program. Julie Farthing who managed the reinvent Your Career expo as well as Annemarie Cross and Jill Noble who also managed the Herald Sun Careers Expo have also ably assisted the committee. And finally, Louise Millar-Hoffmann ably managed this year’s National Conference held in Melbourne.

It would be great to see some new faces assist in some way to share the load. The Commitment to the Committee is to meet around every 6 weeks or so to manage the activities of the Association. This year has been much easier for members by embracing new technology and using telephone conferencing allowing rural based or even Melbourne members to phone in from home to make the load even easier. Otherwise members meet on a Monday evening at the VECCI office in East Melbourne from 5.15pm until around 7pm.

And of course you pick up CPD points along the way as another benefit.

Please have a think about your involvement and I am happy to discuss any issues that you would like to raise at the contact details below.

And finally......

Well that it is really. The Committee and I look forward to hosting you at the December function and I hope to see many new faces attend this year.

Kind regards

Andrew Rimington
