Neuroeducation: How Understanding the Developing Brain Enhances Good Practice!

Keynote Speaker - Dr Michael C Nagel

Since the 1990’s advances in technology and scientific research have provided new insights into the neurological development of children. As a result of this work all aspects of education and child care have been reinvigorated with new understandings of how the brain grows and develops, and how this might impact on behaviour and learning? Moreover, some of the newest research available suggests we may have to radically rethink how we might engage with 21st century minds if we are truly sincere in meeting the myriad of needs students possess as they move through educational systems. This keynote focuses on contemporary research into how the brain matures and develops and the implications of this as we engage with the students around us while they grow and learn.

Dr Michael C Nagel is an Associate Professor in the School of Science and Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Dr Nagel teaches and researches in the areas of cognition, behaviour and learning and human development and early learning. He is currently writing two new books focusing on brain development and early learning which will be published later this year and compliment his earlier works entitled ‘Boys-Stir-Us: Working WITH the Hidden Nature of Boys’ and ‘It’s A Girl’ Thing.’ Dr Nagel is also a member of the prestigious International Neuropsychological Society and a feature writer for the ‘Child’ series of magazines which offers parenting advice to more than one million Australian readers. When he is not busy professionally, he spends his time learning the important lessons of childhood and life from his own children, Madeline and Harrison.

The program starts at 9.00am with the Keynote and is followed by workshops (Cross Cultural Awareness, Using colour to determine career interests, others to be confirmed). The program will conclude at 1.00pm with lunch.
