Career choice- Making skills in a modern world: Making difficult simple and making simple difficult - Col McCowan (OAM)
Three years research was undertaken with 3000, 17 year olds in the final year of secondary education to determine the issues and difficulties they experienced as they were about to choose their post school career/course option(s). The patterns of behaviour didn’t seem to fit some of the traditional models of career decision making and a new understanding of the processes and an example model was developed. Examples of some of the processes students undertake, as well as a number of applications of the model, will be discussed and participants will get the opportunity to relate the findings to their experiences with their clients. Possible skill development programs will be proposed.
Col McCowan (OAM) Col is a registered psychologist, teacher and counsellor.
Assisting individuals through story telling and career assessment - Dr. Mary McMahon
Assessment has played a defining and valuable role throughout the history of career counselling. Both quantitative and qualitative career assessment instruments have been used to assist and guide clients in their career decision making. Quantitative career assessment has received greater emphasis than qualitative career assessment. In recent years, there has been a trend to include narrative and storied approaches into career counselling. How to integrate quantitative assessment and narrative career counselling is the focus of this workshop. Practical suggestions about constructing thick and rich stories from career assessment and scaffolding the construction of future stories will be provided. This workshop will be experiential and will model processes that participants may use with their own clients.
Dr. Mary McMahon Senior Lecturer, School of Education, The University of Queensland, Australia.
