Dear Queensland CDAA members,
We are in great need of about three more people for each time slot at the Reinvent your Career Expo this coming Saturday and Sunday. We would like to have a minimum of five sessions underway at all times, which means we then need additional people at the front desk and also providing “on the run” quick responses to people. For most sessions we currently have five people rostered, but that includes family members who have generously donated their time to be at the front desk and other members who are working tirelessly for one or two whole days.
This is an opportunity for us to raise our professional profile in South East Queensland. The expo has been very well attended in Melbourne and Sydney, and CDAA has been widely publicised by the organisers over the public address system in those locations. If you don’t normally work with adults, this is your opportunity to try the experience. If you are a Career Development Practitioner but do not normally work one-on-one with people, you may prefer to be a “floater” or at the front desk. It really doesn’t matter how you contribute but it would be great if you could give us a little of your time this weekend.
Our Professional Standards refer to developing “appropriate community relationships”. This is a great opportunity to do just that. The more our profile as a profession is raised, the more it benefits all of us whether you work in schools or tertiary education, private practice or government, businesses or rehabilitiation. We all want the public to recognise that career development practitioners can assist them at whatever stage of career decision making or career crisis they are facing. The more the public recognises this, the more range of work will be available for all of us in the future.
Our original request will be attached to this message, so I won’t mention the details here beyond reminding you that your voluntary hours for something like this contribute to your Continuing Professional Development points, and the costs you incur for parking and sandwiches will be reimbursed. If you are able to attend please contact Wanda Hayes (wanda@careerspa.com.au) by Thursday 5th March.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message, and I hope to see some of you on Saturday or Sunday at the Expo.
Kind regards,
Jenni
Reinvent Your Career Expo
The Reinvent Your Career Expo is coming to Brisbane on 7th and 8th March, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
This Expo is focused entirely on career development for adults, and CDAA’s involvement with Expo events in both Sydney and Melbourne has been very successful from the perspective of members, the public and the organisers. A key feature of the Expo is the free brief career consultation service that is provided by CDAA members, at a dedicated stand in a high profile position. Our colleagues in Sydney and Melbourne found their involvement in the Expo enjoyable and rewarding, and they were overwhelmed by demand and the public interest shown in career development. We are hoping that the same will be true in Brisbane!
This Expo provides a golden opportunity for us to promote the value for adults of seeking assistance from qualified and experienced career practitioners. Given the current jobs climate, we expect that people will come to the Expo looking for practical and friendly advice and support.
We would like to invite you to volunteer to participate in the CDAA’s contribution to the Expo. We hope to have as many hands on deck as possible throughout both days of the weekend. We will need:
- People to take and co-ordinate appointments for brief consultations (Could be non-practitioners who are willing to help)
- People to provide brief career consultations for members of the public (each session would be 15 minutes)
- People to “float” at the stand, and provide advice to members of the public who are unable to get an appointment for a brief consultation.
A roster will be drawn up, with individuals allocated to 2 or 3 hour shifts. You may volunteer for 2 shifts in a day, with a break in between, if you wish.
Benefits for volunteers include:
- The satisfaction of both helping people and promoting your own profession at the same time!
- CPD points for the hours that you volunteer at the CDAA stall (maximum 5 hours)
- Free entry to the Expo
- Free parking (Your parking fee will be reimbursed on the day, then CDAA will be reimbursed by the organisers of Reinvent Your Career who are really keen to promote the services we provide.)
- Reimbursement of the cost of a sandwich if you are working over a lunch period (eg if you worked 12 – 3, or 10 - 12 then 2 - 4). Water is available for all people working in the stalls.
- Inclusion on a list of practitioners that will be made available to everyone who visits the CDAA stand, providing your contact details, should people require follow-up assistance. You may distribute your business cards to the individuals you assist during a career check, but are expected to offer the list of other practitioners as well.
Please note that only those people who work on the Expo stand, and who would like to be included, will be listed on this handout. It will not be a complete list of all CDAA members.
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the details below and send them to Wanda Hayes, at wanda@careerspa.com.au by COB 25 February. Wanda will send you an information pack, and confirm your rostered times. In the meantime, learn more about the Expo at www.reinventyourcareer.com.au
