| Research - AHRC paper on age discrimination |
The Australian Human Rights Commission publication ‘Age Discrimination – exposing the hidden barrier for mature age workers’ was released on 1 October 2010 on the 20th anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. This is the first Commission publication of its kind on age discrimination and ageism
The purpose of this paper is primarily educational. It aims to raise awareness and understanding of ageism and unlawful age discrimination against mature age workers in the workplace. It explains what ageism and age discrimination are and what they can look like in Australian workplaces. It also outlines the often devastating impacts of this form of discrimination. The paper explains how mechanisms, such as the Age Discrimination Act 2004 (Cth), can provide protection against age discrimination and assist in tackling ageism more broadly within our community.
The publication can be accessed on-line through the Commission’s website at http://www.humanrights.gov.au/age/hiddenbarrier/. The Commission has also set up a new age discrimination e-list for disseminating the latest news. The Commission invites you to join the e-list at: http://www.humanrights.gov.au/about/mailing_lists/index.html
