Career Landscape: From Island to Global is the central theme. This conference is about the environmental context of career development, which will be explored through the key strands of:

> Work location – rural, regional, urban, global
This sub-theme is intended to capture the influence of geographic location on career development and on the work of career practitioners and the ways that career practitioners assist their clients.

> Work patterns – changing ways of working
This sub-theme is intended to capture the different ways of working brought about by changes in the world of work and globalization.

> Work transitions – the career lifespan
This sub-theme is intended to capture career transitions throughout the lifespan and the corresponding need to develop a career culture and equip people with the skills to manage life, learning and work across the lifespan.

With an emphasis on practical tools, techniques and strategies delegates will be exposed to ideas on ways to assist clients living in rural and regional settings as well as urban and global locations to manage career transitions throughout the lifespan. The conference will explore the different ways of working, brought about by changes in the world of work and globalization as inspiration for managing career transitions.

Launch of the 2008 Continuing Professional Development Program

The 2008 CPD Policy and Program including the amended Schedule of Activities can now be found on the AACC website in the member section under Professional Development. Here you will also find a separate page to enable you to record your CPD hours. This contains the Schedule of Activities, CPD Record Sheets for hard copy or electronic completion and a Summary of the Professional Standards Competencies . A third page provides Professional Development Resources and will be added to in the coming year.

The following points highlight the key changes to the CPD Program:

1. The schedule of CPD activities has been amended to clarify that CPD hours can be accrued from a variety of associations and organizations, not just AACC, and a research and development item has been added.
2. The hours have been amended to minimise the access issues for rural and remote members. A major focus of the PD Committee will be to source quality CPD online options in 2008.
3. The CPD Record Sheet includes a numerical summary of the Standards Competencies to make it easier to indicate the competencies met by any CPD activity against the number.
4. A Summary of the Professional Standards Competencies is available for reference on the CPD page of the website to make it easier to determine which competencies have been addressed.
5. No hard copy booklet will be available to members – an online system for recording CPD is the likely and preferred option.
6. An audit process has been agreed but the consequences of failure to comply is still in discussion.
7. FAQ’s will be developed for the website as the year progresses. Now that the Program has been amended, members should feel free to resubmit unaddressed questions to the AACC Secretariat to ensure that these are included in the FAQ’s.

An article will appear in the next ACP providing further information on the CPD Survey feedback and other aspects of the program.

Australian Government Announces ICT Apprenticeship Program

The Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner recently announced a $15 million Information and Communications Technology (ICT) apprenticeship program - which will deliver up to 60 jobs for young people within Government agencies.
The 4-year Australian Public Service (APS) program, which is being co-ordinated by the Department of Finance and Deregulation, directly addresses the ICT skills shortage in the APS and provides real career opportunities in the technology sector.
Work placements and the academic component of the program will begin in February 2008. During their training, apprentices will receive important ‘on-the-job’ experience with an APS agency and graduate with a nationally-recognised qualification - providing them with the essential foundations to pursue an ICT career in the APS.
