For your 2011 diary
Your committee has been busy planning a range of PD events that cater for our diverse membership.
While your diary is fresh and relatively blank, please slot in these dates:
- Members Networking: Start the year informally over coffee. A chance to catch up, request PD topics, find out how to use Evolve, discover CDAA benefits. Two options to choose from:
Thursday 17 February, 5.30 pm and Friday 18 February 10.30 am
Cream Café & Bar, Cnr Bunda and Genge Streets, Civic
http://www.creamcafebar.com.au/
- Annual General Meeting: Tuesday 8 March, 5.30 pm, Board Room, ACT & Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry
- Wednesday 16 March, In recognition of the centenary of International Women’s Day (celebrated on 8 March), and supported by Cantlie Recruitment, 5.30 for 6.00 pm.
Guest speaker: Kate Sykes, Director of CareerMums, a leading careers centre and jobs board for working parents. Kate is the winner of the 2010 Telstra ACT Business Woman of the Year Award and will speak on strategies for negotiating flexible working arrangements. Whether a parent, a carer, studying, or downsizing, helping people to negotiate flexible working arrangements is a valuable skill for career practitioners.

What are your CDAA goals for 2011?
Setting goals can be risky, particularly if they are created under the guise of New Year resolutions. That said, I’d still like to invite you to create some modest goals that move you along your professional journey.
A couple I can think of for you to consider are:
- To regularly record PD points in Evolve.
- To attend several divisional events during the year. You might put a number on it, or you could even go so far as to say ‘most’ or ‘as many as possible’.
Now both of these goals could possibly trigger further thoughts.
Let’s take recording PD points. Why should you bother? Here are five reasons:
- It’s the right thing to do.
- It maintains your professional status.
- It’s easier to do this regularly than in one bulk hit.
- It builds your credibility as a practitioner.
- It sets an example for other practitioners.
When planning PD events your committee grapples with catering for a diverse membership. What is potentially relevant to one group or person, may be perceived as less or not relevant by another.
So when you look at our 2011 program, if you see something that you think is not relevant to you because of the context in which you work, please consider these possibilities before rejecting the event as not worth attending:
- You never know when you may need the information covered. A client or a friend may seek your advice and you could draw on this information or refer the person to someone who is expert in this area.
- You don’t know how your work requirements may change and what opportunities could come up where this information is needed.
- You may think your clients do not need the information, but then you are faced with someone who is looking for new directions you hadn’t previously considered. Now you need this information.
- We all have a professional obligation to keep abreast of what is happening in our field.
- The topic may be interesting in its own right without needing to be relevant.
- It’s a good thing to support the division and catch up with members.
When Michael Farraday was asking for research funds he was asked by the Finance Minister why they should support his research into electricity. Farraday responded: ‘One day you may be able to tax it.’ We never know what the future may bring.
There may be other goals you wish to set, such as undertaking study to meet minimum standards by 1 January 2012. Whatever they are, please choose your goals wisely and implement them well.
I wish you an enjoyable, safe and refreshing festive season and look forward to seeing you at our events in 2011.
Regards
Ann Villiers
